Michael Cheika has named his squad for the Rugby Championship. A few players that are notable have been omitted and these include; Ben Alexander, James O’Connor, Benn Robinson and Karmicheal Hunt. The Wallabies also welcome Sam Carter, Scott Higginbotham and Dave Dennis with the latter two missing the Autumn tour and Dennis returning to the fold since 2013.

The Waratahs boast the majority of the squad and will feature 14 players. There is also the inclusion of Toulon duo Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell.

  1. Not sure why they say Karmichael Hunt was a notable exception…

Not only is he no Folau (not many are), been average this season… but he still has drug charges looming over his head.

Notable omission is J’OC though… and a few others to a lesser degree like Paul Alo-Emile, Timani and a few others that must be due to not plying their trade in Aus anymore…

Also good to see the National Rugby Championship has unearthed a a few newbies this season…

  2. Hunt was expected, actually dont know why?/ You right! Leafa, Gill and Paul are my what the heck are they not there! Gill probably because of the Hooper-Pocock factor. While the other oke George smith will be rested in this tourney!!

  3. @BC – Milner-Skudder:

Might miss Kane Douglas too… Tah’s certainly did… but there is a new crew of behemoth locks coming through in Arnold and Skelton for starters… but the gist of the new test selection rules has netted the only real worthy players of being in an extended squad… namely Giteau, Mitchell and Horwill…

  4. @bryce_in_oz: Surely Skelton is not the answer? He might weigh 140kg but the Boks only have to look at how the Highlanders ran him off his feet and do the same in Brisbane in 2 weeks. He was walking from setpiece to setpiece in the S15 semifinal and could not lessen the Waratah’s lineout woes. Talking of setpiece woes, Ben and Benn have taken the chop for the scrum problems the Wallabies had last year. Are the new incumbents likely to solve that? But then again if Meyer plays the problematic Shark and Bulls frontrow players in Brisbane maybe the Aussie frontrow will have no worries.

  5. @out wide:

The guy showed this year that he can play 80 minutes almost every game this year.

He is a human wrecking ball, with pace, hands of a back (being a league convert) and has mongrel ball in hand… definitely one to have in a test team even if only for 50 minutes…

He will more than likely be used off the bench as impact or a starting 50/60 to smash opponents…

Sitaleki Timani and Douglas would make my squad ahead of him with Arnold and Horwill… but they are OS…
