The Golden Lions have made late changes to their side to take on Griquas in a Currie Cup clash in Johannesburg on Saturday (16:05 kick-off)….reports Sport 24

Lock Martin Muller (ankle injury) has failed a late fitness test, which sees Warren Whiteley come into the starting team.

Whiteley will start at No 8 and also takes over the captaincy after scrumhalf Ricky Schroeder was initially named captain for the match.

Bobby de Wee will now start at lock, with Ruaan Lerm moving to No 7 flank and Fabian Booysen coming in on the bench.

With the Lions already certain of top spot on the log, coach Johann Ackermann opted to rest several of his star players for the match.

  1. Good decision as he actually still needed game time and there needs to be a cool, calm & collective head in that team to guide these guys.

    These youngsters will learn a lot with him at hel.

    Whiteley was not “rushed in”.

    On Monday already he was slotted as “ready”

    On Tuesday when the team was announced they already proposed this change in the event of Muller failing his late fitness test.

    This is to all intents and purposes like not just a B but a C Lions team.

  3. Be v interesting to see how they go in super rugby this year.

    This coach is actually performing miracles and builfing huge deoth and a winning attitude. They not just scraping wins anymore, they actually dinnering the other teams.

    Just not sure they have any heavies in tight 5 to be super rugby title contenders.
